Cotton duck
Cotton duck is a heavy, firm, plain-woven cotton fabric, more tightly woven than plain canvas. The name is from the Dutch doek, meaning cloth. It is graded by weight in ounces per square yard or grams per square metre, and in the numbered (army-duck) system.
Duck and canvas overlap heavily and the words are often used interchangeably. In strict use, duck is the tighter, firmer plain weave; canvas is a broader term that also covers basket weaves and coarser constructions. Both run from light bag weights to heavy cover weights.
